About the Period Pod:
This Period Pod, similar to Free Little Libraries, will offer 24/7 access to free period products for anyone in need — helping to eliminate barriers and stigma around menstruation for those experiencing period poverty.
Period poverty affects thousands in Kentucky. The Period Pod is a community-driven solution providing dignified, round-the-clock access to menstrual products. This initiative is a collaboration between For Lady’s Sake, Neighborhood House, and Lead Like a Queen, whose youth painted the pod alongside artist Alexa Meza. This is the first pantry of its kind in the Portland neighborhood.
“The installation of Period Pods is near and dear to my heart and the mission of For Lady's Sake at its core,” For Lady’s Sake founder Candice Crawford said. “Not only does this mean communities will have 24/7/365 access to period products, it will create opportunities for neighborhood discussion around periods breaking through some of the shame and stigma that surrounds the topic.
“We want to thank the Neighborhood House for providing the space and support and we also want to thank Lead Like A Queen for allowing their young ladies to beautify the pod!”
The Period Pod was made possible through a powerful collaboration:
- Neighborhood House generously provided the installation space and upkeep of the pod once launched.
- Lead Like a Queen, a local youth empowerment program within Neighborhood House, partnered with Neighborhood House communications associate Alexa Meza to have young girls paint the pod with bold, empowering imagery that celebrates girlhood and community strength.
- For Lady’s Sake provided the period products within the pod
Looking Ahead
For Lady’s Sake’s second Period Pod will be launching soon in District 15, thanks to the generous support of Councilwoman Jennifer Chappell. Updates on its launch will be available on our website www.forladyssake.com and our Facebook and Instagram pages @forladyssake.
For Lady’s Sake invites community members, organizations, and leaders to join the mission. If you’re interested in sponsoring a Period Pod in your neighborhood, please contact info@forladyssake.com.
About For Lady’s Sake:
For Lady’s Sake, LLC is a Louisville-based nonprofit organization committed to restoring dignity and advancing equity for people who menstruate. Founded with a deep belief that menstrual health is a human right, the organization focuses on improving access to essential hygiene products, raising awareness about period poverty, and breaking the stigma that still surrounds menstruation today. Through grassroots advocacy, community partnerships, and innovative outreach programs, For Lady’s Sake ensures that no one has to choose between basic needs and their dignity.
The organization was founded by Candice Crawford, a veteran educator and social advocate, in 2016 after an encounter with an unhoused woman. Together with her wife Reina Kempt, executive director of the organization, For Lady’s Sake has grown from a small community project into a recognized movement that centers empathy, education, and empowerment.
Since its launch, For Lady’s Sake has provided thousands of free period products through strategic community partnerships, outreach efforts, and now “Period Pods” installed in high-need areas. The organization also works to educate youth about periods and engage policymakers and the public through strategic campaigns that highlight how period poverty intersects with broader issues of race, gender, and economic justice.
